N.C. Firewise Grant Program

The North Carolina Divison of Forest Resources has established a Firewise Action/Mitigation Grant Program utilizing funding from the National Fire Plan. Communities which have developed an approved fire mitigation plan may be eligible for up to $18,000 per year to complete actions detailed in the plan.

Eligible communities must include a fire department district, be an organized township, neighborhood, rural community or tribal district. The grant is available to applicants with local populations of less than 10,000. All projects must be located on publicly owned land or land controlled by the community applying for the grant.

The North Carolina Firewise Action/ Mitigation Grant is a cost-share program. Financial
assistance on any project during any fiscal year cannot exceed 80% of the actual expenditures, including expenditures of local, public and private nonprofit organizations participating in the agreement. The applicant, from sources other than federal, must contribute 20% of the total cost of the project. This amount may be in the form of cash or in-kind services.

Grants received for this program can be used for assessing the current wildfire hazard in your
community, the prescribed removal of hazard fuels, and other mitigation as recognized in the initial assessment; for example –dry hydrants, signage, gate construction on emergency access roads, GIS mapping of the community, public education programs and to enhance public safety toward wildfires in the wildland-urban interface.

These grants cannot be used for capital purchases such as buildings, equipment or
vehicles; building roads to access the community other than a gated emergency access;
consulting services other than for wildfire safety and preparedness; and any other actions
outside the intent of the National Fire Plan.
